Mysore has a few heritage hotels that adds to the aurora of its colonial past as well as the regal legacy.

The most spectacular of all is the Lalitha Mahal Palace located at the foothills of Chamundi Hills.
Built in 1921 by the erstwhile maharaja  Krishnaraja Wodeyar IV, this was originally meant as the residence of the the Viceroy of India. Later it was used to host other European guests of the maharaja. In 1974 this was converted into a hotel, still keeping its heritage ambient intact.

The tariff ranges anything from Rs 6,000 to a whooping Rs 30,000 for the most opulent of all hotel rooms in India, the Viceroy Suite!

Amuch smaller cousin of Lalitha Mahal Palace is the Royal Orchid Metropole. Like Lalitha Mahal this too was built as a mansion to host important European guests during the colonial era. In line with Lalitha Mahal , Metropole also was converted into a heritage hotel.

This is managed by the  Royal Orchid Hotels, the same group that manages the vintage hotel, Royal Orchid Brindavan , over looking the sprawling Brindavan Gardens near Mysore. Apart from the accommodation, Royal Orchid Metropole is known for its fine dining. The buffet lunch served in the period ambient is highly sought after.

Green Hotel in the outskirts of Mysore City is another heritage structure that was converted into a hotel. Originally this was called the Chittaranjan Palace, served as the residence of  Mysore’s princesses. Like the name suggests, this was set as a model of sustainable tourism.
