Sri Ranganathaswamy Temple, after which the town is named is located in Srirangapatna island.

This is one of the ancient temples in India and also a important pilgrimage center of Vaishnavism, a Hindu sect.

The idol in this temple is of Lord Vishnu in the reclining posture on the coiled snake ( Anantha), often referred as ananthashayana.
