Located atop the Chamundi hills in Mysore city , this brightly painted state of the demon Mahishasura is an iconic image in Mysore tourism. The fact the very name Mysore is associated with Mahishasura.
The Silver Jubilee clock tower was built in 1927 to commemorate the silver jubilee (25 years) of the rule of Krishnaraja Wodeyar IV, the Maharaja of Mysore. The cost for this was shared by the palace staff of that era. The clock tower is also called Dodda gadiara , means the “big clock tower”, the “small clock tower” being the Dufferin Clock Tower located near KR Circle.

This giant image of Nandi of Mysore (Bull) is located at the top of Chamundi hills in Mysore. More than 350 years old, this is one of the oldest icons in Mysore.

Apart from the road , you can also trek your ways to the Chamundi hills top!
If you are game for it try the 1000 plus steps built in the 17th century by the ruling Wodeyar King. In the year 1659, The then Maharaja of Mysore Dodda Devaraja built this stairway to the hilltop on the western side of the hill.
The starting point of the steps is located behind the JSS College area. Take the JLB road from the city and head towards the NH212 (Ooty Road/ Calicut Road). After crossing the busy NH212 at the junction before JSS college, head straight towards the JSS Mutt ( will appear on your right) . The road ends where the steps start.

Alternatively, you can take the Ooty road from the city and turn left (JLB Road joins on your right) at the junction before the JSS college. Further follow the same route as mentioned above.
The city bus can bring you only up to the JSS college area. The footsteps is at about 1 km walk from the junction. Or hire an auto-rickshaw.

St. Philomena's Church . An inscription of the time reads, ”In the name of that only God – the universal Lord who creates, protects, and reigns over the universe of Light, the mundane world and the assemblage of all created lives – this church is built 1843 years after the incarnation of Jesus Christ, the Enlightenment of the World, as man” Saint Philomena ( venerated as a virgin martyr saint of the Catholic Church in the 19th century ) is said to have been a young Greek princess martyred in the 4th century. In 1926, TRV Thamboo Chetty, the Diwan and Chief Justice of the then Mysore kingdom under Krishnaraja Wodeyar IV, brought a relic (image) of saint Philomena from Peter Pisani, Apostolic Delegate of the East Indies. You can see this image in the catacomb located beneath the altar.
Jaganmohan Palace houses a treasure trove of paintings that far expansive and dramatic than those exhibited inside the Mysore Palace.

Make it a point to visit Jaganmohan Palace, once you are through with the tour of the Mysore Palace. For some reason, visitors to Mysore give this place a miss, though it is an important place in the heritage landscape of Mysore city. Though this palace doesn't appear as extravagant as the Mysore Palace, the Jaganmohan Palace houses a treasure trove of paintings that far expansive and dramatic than those exhibited inside Mysore Palace. Though it looks unassuming, with more than 150 years old this place has been the venue for many landmark events in Indian history.

If you thought Mysore has only one palace – the Mysore Palace – you are in for a surprise. Mysore have quite a few imposing royal residences scattered all round the city ( see the 7 Palaces of Mysore ). Jayalakshmi Vilas Mansion located inside the University of Mysore has many specialities. The overall appearance is of the building is in the typical imposing Greco-Roman fashion. But the interior is done in the native style using generous woodwork. The mansion houses the Folklore Museum, one of its kind by any universities in India. Though the museum was founded in 1968, it is one of the best kept secrets in Mysore’s tourism !
Originally part of the Mysore Zoo, Karainji lake (Karanjikere ) in the city is a sprawling water body in with a beautiful park around it. This is home to more than 5 dozen bird species , both local and migratory. You can easily spot on the fringes of the lake ducklings, darters and during the winter season, pelicans, painted storks, spoon bills , to name a few. Added to this natural habitat, the park has a giant aviary, possibly the largest in the country. Essentially this is a massive net enclosure as high as a tall tree. Visitors can walk through this and observe the birds closely.

With more than 100 years of history, this market is well knitted into the heritage of Mysore. If you are new to the bazaars of India in general, do not miss Devaraja Market. This is a good sample of a traditional Indian market place that are colorful, noisy, vibrant and a tad chaotic.
